Fruit Cocktail is a rare Florida mango from Gary Zill's breeding program, grown from a Jakarta seedling. It's a small-to-medium yellow fruit with fiberless, aromatic flesh and a rich, intense, layered flavor with spice notes. We're still confirming when it ripens on our Merritt Island trees.
Where does Fruit Cocktail come from?
Tropical Acres Farms reports that Fruit Cocktail was a Jakarta seedling from Gary Zill's program in Boynton Beach, Florida, originally planting number 28-18. Like O-15, it was grown from a Jakarta seedling. Our sources don't say when it was named or released.
What does Fruit Cocktail taste like?
The 2025 Zill and UF/IFAS cultivar review describes aromatic, fiberless pulp “with a rich, intense sweet Indian flavor profile of very good quality.” Tropical Acres Farms describes “an extravagantly rich bouquet and flavor, with different spice notes,” medium sweetness, and a taste reminiscent of the packeted fruit juice you may have had with lunch as a child. Our sources don't explain the name, but that description fits it.
What does it look like?
The Zill and UF/IFAS review lists small-to-medium fruit of 8–12 oz, oblong-ovoid, with an intense yellow peel and a light pinkish blush. Tropical Acres Farms describes a roundish, medium fruit that turns yellow.
When is Fruit Cocktail in season?
Both sources call it a mid-season mango in South Florida. Our Merritt Island season runs roughly May through September, and we're still confirming exactly when Fruit Cocktail ripens on our trees. Small-to-medium fruit ripens evenly on the counter in a single layer.
