What Is a Super Alphonso Mango?

Super Alphonso is a Florida mango from Gary Zill's breeding program, not a type of Indian Alphonso. It began as Zill selection 36-8 and was first called “India.” It has rich, sweet, juicy flesh with a hint of Indian spice, and despite its name it does not taste like Alphonso.

Where does Super Alphonso come from?

Super Alphonso was selected by Gary Zill of Zill High Performance Plants in Boynton Beach, Florida. Tropical Acres Farms reports it was grown from a Zill-80 seedling, with Jakarta possibly as the pollen parent. Zill has spent more than 30 years screening seedlings for Southeast Asian and Indian-style aromas and flavors, and Super Alphonso is one of the results.

What does Super Alphonso taste like?

Expect a rich, sweet mango with a light Indian-style spice. The 2025 Zill and UF/IFAS cultivar review rates its flavor as intense. Tropical Acres Farms is candid that it “does not taste like Alphonso,” so think of the name as a nod to its Indian-style character rather than a copy of the Indian original.

Super Alphonso vs. Alphonso

Alphonso is the famous mango of western India, with buttery, saffron-orange flesh and a strong aroma. Super Alphonso is a separate Florida-bred variety. We grow both, so you can taste them side by side: our Alphonso ripens in July.

When is Super Alphonso in season?

Our Merritt Island season runs roughly May through September. We're still confirming exactly when Super Alphonso ripens on our trees.
