Sweet Tart is a rare Florida mango from Gary Zill's breeding program, grown from a Zill Indochinese seedling. The small yellow fruit has fiberless orange flesh and an intense flavor: a candy-like tartness balanced by a big punch of sweetness. On our Merritt Island trees it ripens in June.
Where does Sweet Tart come from?
Tropical Acres Farms reports that Sweet Tart was a seedling of Zill Indochinese (“Zinc”), selected by Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida under the original planting number C-1. Our late-season Venus also came from a Zill Indochinese seedling, and Tropical Acres Farms calls the two siblings.
What does Sweet Tart taste like?
Tropical Acres Farms calls it “a flavor bomb with intense richness and complexity,” with a strong tart edge “like that of a candy” balanced by sweetness. The 2025 Zill and UF/IFAS cultivar review describes a rich, complex, intense flavor that runs from tart to very sweet. The balance shifts as it ripens: Tropical Acres Farms says the tartness fades and the sweetness becomes “cola syrup-like.”
What does it look like?
The fruit is small, about 8–12 oz in the Zill and UF/IFAS review, oval-oblong with a prominent beak, and yellow at maturity. The flesh is medium-firm, fiberless and orange. The seed is large for the fruit, so expect less flesh per mango than with a big variety.
When is Sweet Tart in season?
On our Merritt Island trees it usually ripens in June, around the same time as Edgar and Pram Kai Mea. See the May–June harvest.
